Checkerboard Scarf

Autumn is slowly setting in and it's that time of year when we resort to our raincoats and scarves to keep our necks warm!

This scarf, I had first made it for my lover, but his recent coats all have rather high collars, to my delight and that of my teenager! Alternately, we wear it and enjoy its softness, nice length, and oh-so-comfortable textured pattern.

To make your own, you will need 400 grams of DK weight yarn . In my case, I used as the main yarn - 2 balls of 100 grams (200 meters) of La Bobineuse Baby Alpaca yarn in charcoal color and secondary yarn -  200 grams of La Bobineuse house mix in a black and white colourway.

Don't hesitate to use DK size yarns that you have at home, or 4 Baby Alpaca balls in the colors of your choice to create an effect that you like.

You will also need a pair of 6mm needles or a size around in order to achieve a texture that you like.

Holding one strand of each color together, cast on 35 stitches.

Knit 4 rows of garter stitch.

Checkerboard pattern :

Row 1: Knit *5 stitches, purl 5*, repeat from *-* until the last 5 stitches, then knit 5 stitches

Row 2: Knit *purl 5, knit 5*, repeat from *-* until the last 5 stitches, then purl 5

*** optional section, to add color block and different texture. Skip this section if you don't feel like doing it***

Drop the secondary yarn (the house blend in this case) and hold together 2 strands of the main yarn (here, the Baby Alpaca in charcoal). Knit 12 rows of garter stitch.

Drop the 2nd strand of the main color and pick up the strand of the secondary color.

Repeat rows 1 to 8 of the checkerboard pattern 35 times, or until the scarf measures approximately 1.50 meters.

Knit 4 rows of garter stitch.

Cast off the stitches and fasten the threads.
