How much yarn do I need?
We ask this question every time we start a knitting project!
Fear of running out and not finding enough to finish a project or fear of buying too much and getting stuck with one ball too many, this is a situation that comes up constantly.
Here finally is a tool that will help you solve this puzzle (or at least get closer to the right answer!)
All you need to use this tool is to know the expected dimensions of your project. You can use the total surface area or the length X width dimensions. You enter the information in the appropriate boxes, choose the yarn you are interested in and press the arrow to see the number of balls or skeins you will need to complete your project.
Some little notes:
- First, it is important to remember that this tool is intended to be a basis, to guide you in purchasing yarn, but it is not an exact science. It is precise, but not perfect. Several factors can influence the quantity of wool used.
- Quantities are measured from hand knitted samples, using the needles recommended by the manufacturer. The sample may vary from person to person, depending on the needle size used and the stitch knitted.
- The swatches are made by knitting so the quantities required for a crocheted piece will probably be different. Crochet usually requires more yarn than knitting for the same area.
- Only yarns for which we have a knitted sample are displayed in the tool. The data can however be used as a basis for equivalent yarns.
