The Essential Equipment

  1. Sock yarn : For socks, we recommend a yarn that contains a little nylon in addition to the wool to make them more resistant. We usually recommend "fingering" or "sport" weight yarn. We have plenty of options in the store, so don't hesitate to ask for advice! In general, you will need less than 100 grams to knit a pair of medium socks, o one ball or skein of yarn is normally enough to knit a pair of socks! (FYI, the 2 pairs of socks in the image above were knitted with the same ball of gradient yarn, and there was even a tiny ball left at the end. The striped socks were made by alternating this gradient yarn + the plain gray yarn)

  2. Knitting Needles : You will need double pointed needles (DPNs) or a circular needle for the magic loop (a cable length of 80cm is ideal), depending on your preference. The most common sizes are between 2mm and 3.5mm, but it definitely depends on the yarn you choose and your tension.

  3. Stitch Markers : This is the handy tool to help you see where you are in your knitting, such as the beginning of the round or the heel. Essential to avoid getting lost!

  4. Yarn Needle : This little needle is super useful for weaving in yarn at the end.

  5. Socks Pattern : There are so many patterns available! Socks can be knitted from the ankle, to the toes, or vice versa. You can even knit both at the same time with the magic loop technique! Choose one that matches your skill level. We can help you find one that you like.

Some Tips for Success

  • Make a Swatch : We can't say it enough, and yes, it also applies to socks! Knit a small piece to check that your tension is good and that you like the result of the yarn-needle combination. This also allows you to ensure that your socks will be the right size.

  • Try it on as you go : If you can, try the socks on as you knit them. This is easiest with a pattern that starts at the toes, but it can also be done with a pattern that starts at the ankle. That way, you can be sure they'll fit like a glove!

  • Knit the second sock as soon as the first is finished : Better yet, knit both at the same time, on the same magic loop needle, on 2 sets of double-pointed needles, or on 2 separate circular needles. Whether you do it at the same time or right after, don't let the second sock syndrome take over! Make both quickly so you can wear them and enjoy them.

  • Patience and Pleasure : Knitting socks requires a little patience, especially at the beginning, but it's so satisfying to see them take shape under your fingers!

You'll see, knitting socks is addictive! We're here to help you every step of the way, whether it's choosing the right yarn, the right needles, or simply to encourage you to knit the second one! Come see us in store, we'll be happy to chat with you about knitting!
