I'm new to crochet

Want to get started with crochet but don't know where to start? Don't panic, we're here to help! Whether you're a complete beginner or just need a little help getting started, this page is for you.

Basic material to get started

To get started with crochet, here are the essential items you will need:

  1. Crochet Hooks : There are different sizes of crochet hooks, and it is usually recommended to choose the size of the hook based on the pattern and yarn that will be used, but to start, we recommend a medium-sized hook, such as a 4 mm or 5 mm hook. Opt for an ergonomic hook like the Knitter's Pride Wave Soft for more comfort.

  2. Crochet Yarn : Choose a medium weight yarn, in cotton like Eco Cotton DK or a wool and acrylic blend like Estelle DK . Avoid yarns that are too thin or too thick for your first projects. Also avoid fancy or very hairy yarns, the stitches will be harder to see. For the same reason, favor light-colored yarns.

  3. Scissors : A pair of small scissors for cutting thread .

  4. Yarn Needle : A round-tipped needle for weaving in yarn once your project is complete.

  5. Stitch markers : Very useful for marking the beginning of your rows or specific stitches in your projects. For crochet, choose a removable marker, either plastic or metal , in a contrasting color so you can see it clearly.

Resources for learning crochet

Some people are completely self-taught and will start crocheting without help. For others, there are several resources available to help you get started, no matter how you learn.

Recommended First Projects

To get started, choose simple projects that will allow you to master the basics of crochet without getting discouraged, but above all, that you want to crochet! Here are some ideas:

  1. Dishcloth : Crochet a simple square back and forth with the stitches of your choice and using an absorbent material like cotton. Depending on the final size of your dishcloth, it can be used to wash your face or wipe down the kitchen counter!
  2. Granny Square : A great way to learn basic stitches and make a blanket or cushion by joining several squares together. The first ones may be a little uneven, but that's what makes them charming!
  3. A simple cowl or headband : Using only single crochet or double crochet, you can create a cute cowl or headband for winter (and it takes less time to make than the classic scarf!)
  4. Coasters : Quick and rewarding little projects to learn to crochet in the round.
