I'm starting to knit

Want to get started with knitting but don't know where to start? Don't panic, we're here to help! Whether you're a complete beginner or just need a little help getting started, this page is for you.

Basic material to get started

To get started with knitting, here are the essential items you will need:

  1. Knitting needles : There are different types and sizes of needles, and it is usually recommended to choose them according to the model and the yarn that will be used, but to start, we recommend a pair of medium-sized straight needles, between 4 mm and 5 mm. Bamboo needles are a good option since they are comfortable and do not slip too much (unlike metal ones).

  2. Knitting yarn : Choose a medium sized yarn, made of cotton like the Eco Cotton DK or a wool and acrylic blend like Estelle DK . Avoid yarns that are too thin or too thick for your first projects. Also avoid fancy or very hairy yarns, the stitches will be harder to see. For the same reason, choose light-colored yarns.

  3. Scissors : A pair of small scissors for cutting the thread .

  4. Wool needle : A round-tipped needle for weaving in ends once your project is finished.

  5. Stitch markers : Very useful for marking the beginning of your rows or specific points in your projects. A removable marker, either in plastic or in metal , in a contrasting color will do the trick very well.

Resources for learning knitting

Some people are completely self-taught and will start crocheting without help. For others, there are several resources available to help you get started, no matter how you learn.

  1. Online tutorials :

    • YouTube is full of videos for beginners. We also have several short tutorials on our YouTube channel to help you master the basics.
    • Clo Tricot also offers several free tutorials, in French and English, on its channel.
  2. Books for beginners :

  3. Workshops and courses :

Recommended First Projects

To get started, choose simple projects that will allow you to master the basics of knitting without getting discouraged, but above all, that you want to knit! Here are some ideas:

  1. Dishcloth : Knit a simple square back and forth using an absorbent material like cotton. Depending on the final size of your dishcloth, you can use it to wash your face or wipe down the kitchen counter!
  2. Deluxe Dishcloth : Use the dishcloth as a basic canvas to test out different stitches and stitch combinations. Even if the end result turns out to be a little crooked, your dishes won't hold it against you! Above all, it will allow you to practice and develop a nice tension.
  3. A simple headband : Again, using only knit stitches, you can create a lovely headband for winter (and it takes less time to make than the classic scarf!)

We hope you find this information helpful as you begin your adventure into the wonderful world of knitting. Feel free to explore our online shop or visit our brick and mortar store to discover our selection of yarns and accessories.
